5 types of selling methods

There is not one method of selling that will automatically give you the best results. Your personality and experiences largely influence the way you sell. Your method may be very effective, but it is still good to learn something new from time to time. Sales.about.com described a few ways of selling which you can combine for better results.

1) The instant buddy

These salespeople are warm and friendly. They ask questions and show interest in the customer. They try to connect on an emotional level. A friendly approach can be very effective, but you cannot fake it. If you are only feigning interest in the customer, very probably (s)he can tell.

2) The expert

Experts are not very emotional, and they sell using logic. They often set themselves the task of becoming an expert in everything related to their industry. They position themselves as problem-solvers. This approach requires lots of learning and overview in your field. If you become an expert, there is a very good chance your customers will come back to you again and recommend you to others.

3) The consultant

This approach combines the above two. Consultants are experts who care about customers. This approach is very effective, and requires a lot of time on the salesperson's part. You need to be very knowledgeable and able to connect with customers emotionally.

4) The networker

If you want to create a network of customers, co-workers and other salespeople, you need to be communicative and willing to attend events to meet new people and strengthen relationships. Do not forget that people who have done you a favour deserve to get something back. You can get plenty of customers with this type of attitude.

5) The hard seller

The hard seller forces customers to buy. These salespeople have a bad reputation, so do not use this approach. Customers will never come back and there will be no referrals for you.
